Saving Money with the Bayern Ticket

Is the Bayern Ticket Worth It? Our Experience Traveling from Munich to Kufstein

If you’re planning day trips from Munich, the Bayern Ticket can be an incredible value. It’s also a great value if you’re needing to get from Munich to parts of Austria. We used it for a trip from Munich to Kufstein, Austria, and it ended up saving us a substantial amount of money compared to purchasing regular train tickets.

For anyone exploring Bavaria or into the Tirol area of Austria by regional train, especially as a couple or group, this is definitely something worth looking into. Note this ticket also works for travel between Munich and Salzburg.

What Is the Bayern Ticket?
The Bayern Ticket is a regional transportation pass that allows unlimited travel throughout Bavaria for one day on most regional trains, buses, trams, and local transportation services. We used it for our journey from Munich to Kufstein (as some cities in Austria are eligible) and found it to be both affordable and convenient. The pass is good for up to five people traveling on the ticket which makes it an even better value for large groups and families.

Cost Savings
For two people, our Bayern Ticket cost approximately $33 USD total.

Had we purchased regular train tickets instead, the cost would have been around 55 euros per person. That means the Bayern Ticket saved us a significant amount while still allowing us to travel throughout the day using regional transportation. The ticket also covered additional transit services within Munich from the airport to the Munich Ost Station, making it even more worthwhile.

Buying the Ticket
You can purchase the Bayern Ticket from station ticket machines, although I initially found the machine process a little confusing. You can also buy it through the DB Navigator app from Deutsche Bahn, which may be easier for many travelers. One thing to note: you need to write the names of all travelers on the ticket immediately after purchasing it.

Our Experience Using It

We had to make a connection at Munich Ost, which was probably the busiest part of the trip. The trains were crowded, and since we purchased second class tickets, there were no assigned seats. At times, we had to stand for portions of the journey due to how full the train was. Still, despite the crowds, everything ran efficiently and we reached Kufstein without any issues.

Why I’d Recommend It
What makes the Bayern Ticket such a great option is the flexibility and value. Instead of paying expensive point-to-point fares, we were able to travel for the entire day on one ticket while also using local transportation services. And even though we only used it for our journey from the Munich Airport to Kufstein, it still was more affordable than buying two point to point tickets.

Final Thoughts
The Bayern Ticket ended up being one of the best transportation values of our trip. While the trains can be busy and seating isn’t guaranteed in second class, the savings and convenience more than made up for it. If you’re planning regional travel around Bavaria, this is absolutely something I’d recommend considering.
