We decided to head up to Oregon for an extra long weekend around Labor Day. We opted to spend two nights in Portland as I’d never experienced Portland aside from a quick stop on the outskirts of town heading back from the coast back down to Eugene. Here’s a review of our stay at the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland.

With the Chase Sapphire Reserve Edit Credits, we opted to select a hotel that would maximize the credits. I had $250 for a two night Edit stay, $250 for an IHG/Omni/Virgin stay, and $100 off a $600 spend.  With these credits, we ended up spending $57.63 for the two nights (plus some gratuity and fees which I’ll get to later).

Chase’s Edit Benefits include:

• Early Check-In (we utilized)
• Late Check-out where available. At this property, it is 4 p.m.  We didn’t need it, but it’s a nice touch. Regular check-out is 12 p.m. which I still think is quite generous.
• $30 per person daily breakfast credit at il Solito. Note that this credit does not cover service charges, alcoholic beverages or tips.
• $100 per stay credit
• Upgraded room when available (weren’t able to utilize)
• In-room welcome amenity (ours was water)

Property Resort Fee

The property has a $33.64 daily resort fee. (Ours was paid as part of our booking through Chase.) It covers:

• $10 daily credit to il Solito, Bacchus Bar, or the Bodega Pantry
• 20% off stay if booked before departure
• Access to Game Lounge which includes use of Xbox and Nintendo Switch
• Complimentary wine tasting coupons for tours in Willamette Valley
• Wellness Perks like different spa discounts at Knot Springs and Portland Wine Spa
• Local discounts to restaurants

Other amenities:

• 24 hour fitness center
• Game lounge with pool table
• Bikes
• Complimentary Coffee and Tea in the lobby from 6-10 a.m.
• Social hour with wine from 5-6 p.m.
• Wi-Fi

Even though Kimpton’s secret phrase was technically over, we were told since there wasn’t a new one available, we could utilize it. We were “In Bloom and Out of Office” and received another $75 credit.

Additionally, as IHG Platinum Elite members we could opt for the points or a $15 Raid the Bar Credit. We went with the $15 credit. We also opted out of housekeeping and that gets you 500 points towards IHG rewards, but I’m not sure if we were actually awarded the points.

We ended up using much of the credits for our valet parking which was $60 a day.

The Hotel and the Room

The hotel has a good location on Broadway. It’s next to the Hotel Lucia and down the street from the Hotel Benson. It was walking distance to everywhere we wanted to be. There is garage parking for $28 across the street, but we opted for valet to use our credits.

At check-in, Mikala was very friendly and helpful. She looked for a room upgrade as part of the Edit benefits, but said she didn’t have anything available. So she asked if we wanted a high floor. We said, yes, high floor and away from the elevator. We were put in a room on the 8th floor. I honestly can’t remember the number, but it was right around the corner from the elevator.

Upon opening the door we noticed:

• How loud it was from the elevator
• How dark it was (tiny windows and very little lighting)
• It had a weird layout. There was like a little hallway with a credenza around the corner on the side.
• The bathroom had at least 8+ tiny bugs flying around and going into the sink

Still traumatized from the Boulders experience, we went downstairs to change rooms. They moved us to the Ebony Room on the 7th floor, room 709.

This one was away from the elevator, didn’t have bugs, and had huge windows with lots of light. The layout was also normal. 

Overall, the room was clean though the bathroom had no counterspace and was a little dated and shabby. The shower gel had a very strong citrus smell. There was also only one robe in the closet, but the room is for two people.

While dated, I was happy the room was clean. The room overlooked Broadway which got a little loud, but I had brought earplugs so it was fine. The second night I didn’t need them at all. An eye mask is helpful though for any light that comes in through the curtains.

The hotel’s free social hour from 5-6 p.m. includes free wine. They have a choice of two red and two white. They also had some small appetizers. One was a chickpea spread on crackers. It was really spicy. The second night was a cracker with I think cheese and some pickled onion. I didn’t try that. But the wines were a nice touch.

Il Solito Dining

We dined at il Solito for breakfast. We had a $30 per person credit, but it did not cover the service charge, gratuity or alcohol. It is sufficient to get an entree and a juice or a coffee.

The first morning I had sausage gravy and biscuits with the egg removed. I didn’t care for it. It was two small biscuits smothered in spicy sausage gravy. I ordered a side of fruit which was very good as well as a latte. My latte didn’t come. We had to ask for it. The latte and Chris’ juice ended up being comped. There was some confusion apparently between our nice server and the barista. Chris had the il Solito breakfast plate which came with eggs, potatoes, toast and sausage.

The second day I opted to just order various items a la carte. I ordered toast, potatoes, and a fruit cup. All were good. Chris ordered eggs, bacon, and toast. Note that tea and coffee are free in the lobby so if you just want drip coffee, get it out there and bring it in and save $6.

Breakfast filled us up but wasn’t overly memorable. What I also want to say is every single person in the restaurant was super friendly. I was so impressed. The way they were happy and friendly was refreshing and should be a model for other hotels.

Bacchus Bar 

We had dinner in the Bar one night as the restaurant is not open for dinner. I had the vodka pasta. Chris had the burger. They were fine, but nothing that overly stood out. The bar area is small but the staff is friendly.

Final Thoughts

In the end, we had $28 of our credits left over which we couldn’t apply to the gratuities which were $29.80 and change. So we ended up buying two bags of Tate’s cookies for $10 each and 2 cans of chips for $4 each. I wish they would have let us use the credits for the gratuities.

We spent $87.43 out of pocket after all of our Edit/Chase credits. So for two nights, two breakfasts, a dinner, parking, and wine hour, I thought this was reasonable. I don’t know if I would have been so thrilled if I paid $687.43 for the experience.

Overall, I’d say if you’re looking  for use of Edit credits this could be an option, just know the hotel is not new and modern. Kimpton properties in general are funky and unique with good service, and this one fit the bill.
