Even if you can’t think of the name, you likely know what Hallstatt is. It’s that postcard-perfect Austrian scenery that graces computer backgrounds. Travelers visit for the charming waterfront houses, scenic lake views, historic salt mines, and surrounding Alpine landscape. Social media of the town with influencers have caused massive tourism to the area, but even so, it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the world.
I often see people asking online if they should go. Should they make a daytrip from Vienna or elsewhere in Austria.
My answer: it depends.
If you are based in Vienna, it’s too far. If you are in the Salzburg region, it’s doable, but you must weigh the logistics against your expectations. I went via a car. This makes it much easier. If you are going to go, you want to go early. Driving gives you flexibility. It saves time vs. piecing together trains and other public transit options.
This is one of the most crowded and some say overhyped parts of Austria. If you arrive when the masses and tourist buses are there, it’s not going to be that enjoyable. That’s why I recommend going early. Arrive before 8:30 a.m. It’s true, some things won’t be open yet. But you are there for scenery. Take in the scenery and then if you opt to stick around pop into the shops, restaurants, and tourist attractions.
Another reason to get there early? Parking fills up.

Once there, walk the lakefront for those postcard views. Wander up the hill around the little houses. Please be considerate to those living there. This is their home. The narrow streets through are picturesque before they get packed.

If you want to be out on the lake, take a scenic cruise or rent one of those swan boats. I so wanted to do the swan boat when I was there but ran out of time because it was starting to get crowded and we just wanted to move on to other things.

There are some churches you can visit which are worth your time. The main little square looks like its out of a fairytale.

Fun fact: Hallstatt is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe, with a history dating back thousands of years due to its rich salt deposits. This salt mining brought prosperity to the village, and there is a salt mine nearby you can visit. It was also included in the last John Wick movie, “The Ballerina.”
Final Thoughts

Hallstatt was somewhere I thought looked interesting to go. I have to admit I was enticed by the photos, but when we were planning our trip, I almost cut it out because it was a bit of a drive and there were things we wanted to see. After doing a bit more research, I decided it would be something to make an effort to see. For me personally, I’m glad that we did. I visited on my birthday, and it was a nice way to spend a few hours there in the morning. A few hours, that’s it. I would not have wanted to be there all day. My favorite part was the scenery – I loved seeing the fairytale homes along the lake and the water just seemed to shimmer.
Think about your expectations and what you want. How important is it to you to visit, how much time do you have, and can you easily get there? But even if you opt not to go, Austria has plenty of magical places to spend your time.
