Buda vs. Pest: Where to Stay in Budapest

If you’re planning a trip to Budapest, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is this: Should you stay in Buda or Pest?

Having stayed on both sides – once in Pest and three times in Buda I can tell you this isn’t a simple “one is better” answer. It depends entirely on the type of experience you want.

Let’s break it down clearly so you can choose the right side for your trip.

Buda vs. Pest: A Breakdown

Why Stay in Buda?

Buda feels like stepping into a quieter, more romantic version of Budapest.

  • Cobblestone streets
  • Castle views at night
  • Fewer crowds in the evenings
  • A more “local” feel

The area around Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion is especially magical once the day-trippers leave.

My Experience Staying at the Budapest Hilton

I’ve stayed three times at the Hilton Budapest, and the location is hard to beat.

Imagine this:

  • Buffet breakfast overlooking Fisherman’s Bastion
  • Direct views of the Hungarian Parliament Building
  • Watching the city wake up from above the Danube. I will tell you watching the sunrise over the Danube with the Parliament in the distance is the most magical thing I’ve seen. It’s one of those “this is why I travel” moments. During my third trip there, we had a Danube view room, slept with the blinds open, and my jetlagged self, woke as the sun was starting to come up. It was magical and also what jetlag?!

What I Loved About the Hilton Budapest

  • Incredible location right on Buda Hill
  • Historic architecture: The hotel incorporates remnants of a 13th-century Dominican monastery and medieval cloisters giving it a unique, old-meets-modern feel
  • Renovated rooms (around 2017/2018) with clean, modern finishes
  • Executive lounge:
    • Inviting atmosphere
    • Solid appetizers and drinks
    • Wine selection (rosé, white, red)—though the red, at least during my last stay was terrible.
  • Breakfast:
    • Excellent and filling
    • Fresh grapefruit juice (a standout)
    • Hashbrown-style potatoes
    • Made-to-order omelets

The Downsides of Staying in Buda

Let’s be practical there are trade-offs.

  • Quiet at night: Great if you want peace, not great if you want energy
  • Limited dining options nearby
  • Getting around takes effort:
    • You’ll deal with hills and stairs daily
    • There is a bus system serving Buda Hill (including routes connecting to Deák Ferenc tér), but relying on it constantly can get old. Just walk up and down the hill or take a Bolt.

Why Stay in Pest?

Pest is where the action is.

  • More restaurants than you could ever try
  • Bustling nightlife
  • Easier transportation
  • Flat, walkable streets

When I stayed in Pest (back in the former Le Méridien days – now it is the Al Habtoor Palace Budapest ), the convenience was unmatched.

What Makes Pest the Better Choice for Many Travelers

  • Dining: From traditional Hungarian to trendy spots
  • Nightlife: Ruin bars, cocktail lounges, late-night energy. (I’m not a Ruin bar fan, but if that’s your thing, it’s easier to do by staying on the Pest side.)
  • Transit: Easy access to metros, trams, and buses
  • Walkability: No hills, no stairs. Pest isn’t called flat as a pancake for nothing. (No, really, it’s flat.)

You’re also close to major sights like:

St. Stephen's Basilica, Budapest
  • St. Stephen’s Basilica
  • Andrássy Avenue
  • Parliament
  • The Danube

The Biggest Consideration: Lifestyle vs. Logistics

Staying on Buda Hill is stunning and peaceful. However:

  • You’ll walk up and down stairs daily
  • You may rely on buses or Ubers/Bolts more than you want
  • Late-night returns are less convenient

Pest Is Just Easier

  • Step outside → restaurants everywhere
  • Step outside → transit everywhere
  • Step outside → energy everywhere

Choose Buda If:

  • You want quiet evenings and scenic surroundings
  • You value views over convenience
  • You don’t care about nightlife
  • You like the idea of a more romantic, slower pace

Choose Pest If:

  • You want restaurants, bars, and activity at your doorstep
  • You prefer easy transportation and walkability
  • You plan to be out late
  • You want a more immersive, energetic city experience

If it’s your first trip to Budapest, Pest is usually the smarter choice.

I’ve loved staying in Buda especially at the Hilton. The views, the atmosphere, the calm… it’s special. But if I’m being completely honest? Next time, I’d stay in Pest. Why? Because Pest has evolved so much since my first visit in 2007. There’s more to explore, more to eat, more to experience and I want to be in the middle of it.
