After three stays at the Hilton Budapest, I can confidently say this: if you’re booking this property, you’re booking it for the views and they absolutely deliver.
Set in the heart of the Buda Castle District, this hotel offers a completely different Budapest experience than staying across the river in Pest. It’s quieter, more atmospheric, and at night, magical.

The Views: The Real Selling Point

From many rooms (and even breakfast), you’re looking out over the Danube River at the breathtaking and iconic Hungarian Parliament Building and the fairytale towers of Fisherman’s Bastion.
At night, this place becomes something else entirely. Watching the Parliament lights glow is incredible and memorable. Equally fun is watching the boats gliding on the Danube and seeing some miss the lights entirely because they arrived too late. Yes, this is a thing. In winter, the lights get turned off right at 10 p.m. Think of someone switching off a light. It’s exactly like this. I really enjoyed my last trip, sitting in our room in the evening with a glass of wine watching the boats and the lights. But I will tell you that first time seeing the lights will give you chills. When I was there in 2025, I arrived after a long international travel journey and opened the door to my room to see the magical Parliament lights. It was stunning. We actually slept with the drapes open that night, and I’ll never forget waking up in the morning to the most beautiful sunrise over Parliament, the Danube and Fisherman’s Bastion. Wow! The views never get old.

Location: Stunning but Not Effortless

The hotel’s location in the Castle District is both a pro and a con.
What works:
- Peaceful, low-traffic area
- Gorgeous nighttime walks with panoramic views
- Immediate access to historic sites like Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church and Buda Castle.

What to consider:
- It’s not as convenient as staying in Pest
- Expect a hill climb, or plan to use taxis/Bolt. Remember if you walk up the hill, you burn calories for extra cake.
- There are buses, but you’ll likely still be walking
Dining is also limited up here. After dark, the area quiets down significantly. This is fine if you want calm evenings, but less ideal if you’re looking for a lively or varied dining scene.
Rooms: Comfortable with a Recent Refresh

Rooms were renovated around 2017, and overall they feel clean, modern, and comfortable.
That said, my experiences have varied slightly:
- First two stays: seamless, no issues
- Most recent stay: Had to switch rooms due to a noticeable bathroom odor, and the entire floor had a slightly off smell
To their credit, staff handled the room change well. Still, it’s something worth noting since consistency matters at this level.

Breakfast: A Highlight
The breakfast buffet is one of the stronger aspects of this property. They had a variety of pastries, muffins, donuts, fresh fruits, a made-to-order omelet station, freshly squeezed juices (I love the grapefruit juice), a variety of hot items, Asian items, gluten-free items, and even salad. Yes, one morning I did have a salad for breakfast.

- Wide variety of options
- Quality is solid across the board
- And again, those views while you eat (if you’re close to the windows) are hard to beat.

Executive Lounge: Very Good

If you have access to the executive lounge, it’s a nice perk. Access is provided to Hilton Honors Diamond members and those who have booked Executive floor rooms. Note if have Hilton Gold status, you will not receive access.
What works:
- Evening appetizers (typically 4–6 PM)
- Comfortable space to unwind
- Not a large space but feels cozy.
- Staff is prompt to pick up items.

Where it falls short:
- Wine selection is underwhelming (the red on my last visit was not great)
- Could benefit from adding dessert options. Note they did in 2025 some nights, but not when I was there in February 2026.
Also worth noting: Depending on your room location, you may have to pass through the lounge to reach your room if you don’t use specific elevators. It’s a small thing, but it does get annoying.
The lounge also offers breakfast so you could take your breakfast here instead of in the dining room, but it’s much more limited and I preferred to have breakfast in the main dining area.

Status & Upgrades: Manage Expectations

For those with Hilton Honors status:
- Upgrades seem fairly limited, even for Diamond members
- I’ve received view rooms as a Gold member, so the incremental benefit at Diamond level didn’t feel significant
This is one of those properties where availability, not just status, drives the experience.
A Unique Historic Setting

One of the more interesting aspects of the Hilton Budapest is how it’s built into the surrounding history.
The hotel incorporates parts of a former Dominican monastery with preserved cloisters and architectural elements woven into the property. It’s a subtle but meaningful detail that reinforces the sense that you’re staying somewhere truly tied to Budapest’s past, not just a standard chain hotel.
Nearby Gem: Wine Lovers Take Note
Within the property, is the highly regarded Faust Wine Cellar.
While not affiliated with the hotel, it’s known for curated Hungarian wine tastings in a historic cellar setting. If you’re staying here, it’s an easy and worthwhile addition to your itinerary. Be sure to make advance reservations.
Rooftop Bar (Seasonal)
There is a rooftop bar on-site, though it was closed during my winter visits. Given the positioning of the hotel, it’s safe to assume the views over Parliament, the Danube, and Pest are exceptional. If you’re visiting in warmer months, this is likely a major bonus.
Gift Shop to Spend a lot of Forints
If you need something in a pinch, the gift shop does have personal items and snacks. Be prepared for high prices. Supermarkets are very limited on Castle Hill. There is a mini market not too far, but it doesn’t have a huge selection.
Value: You’re Paying for the View
This isn’t the cheapest option in Budapest, but it is also not the most expensive. Pricing sits in the high middle, depending on season. The views do justify the cost and the experience feels elevated but not over-the-top luxurious. If the scenery matters to you, it’s worth it. If you’re not looking for a party-atmosphere or an area of Budapest that is bustling, then this property and Castle Hill are your place.
Would I Stay Again?
I genuinely love this property, but after three stays, I’d personally choose Pest next time. (And likely come back here on my sixth trip to the city). Not because this hotel falls short, but because Pest has evolved so much, and it offers a completely different energy. It has more restaurants, nightlife, and walkability.
Who should book the Hilton Budapest:

- Travelers prioritizing views and atmosphere
- Those who want a quiet, romantic, or slower-paced stay
- First-time visitors looking to experience the Castle District
Who might prefer Pest:
- Food-focused travelers
- Those wanting easy, flat walkability
- Anyone prioritizing nightlife or convenience
Overall Thoughts
The Hilton Budapest delivers a memorable stay anchored by some of the best views in the city. If you want to wake up overlooking the Parliament and end your night watching the city glow, this is one of the most compelling places to do it in Budapest.
