Where to Stay in Breckenridge

Victorian buildings and cars in Breckenridge Colorado

Breckenridge offers a number of accommodation options including hotels, inns, and vacation rentals. There’s pros and cons to everything, but this post is going to focus on location. It’s said that location is everything and that is true. On other vacations (not to Breck), I’ve stayed at places that were lovely but were not convenient and required a car to get to things. (Example – A hotel I stayed at in Vail a few years ago.) I made it a priority when visiting Breck to stay somewhere that was walkable to shops, restaurants, hikes, etc. I hate having to drive everywhere and deal with parking, and I don’t think Breck has a big rideshare scene.

When we went in October, we stayed at Marriott’s Mountain Valley Lodge. This property had a good location. It was right at Main Street Station and on Maggie Pond. It’s just a block to Main Street. We had a kitchenette in a small studio. While there was no direct view, we had a little view from the balcony of the Blue River. The hotel had some activities like a wine night, crafts, taco night, etc. I think they also had other themed nights as well, but we didn’t partake in those. The property was clean. It had a shared laundry facility, game room, and outdoor heated pool and hot tub. The pool was being refurbished when we walked by in May. The parking was in an adjacent garage which was fine. It was only $15 in October a night which by Breck standards is cheap! I see it’s now $25 a night. The only bad thing was the pillows were flat like a piece of looseleaf notebook paper so if you stay here, bring your own pillow.

When we returned in May, were traveling with Ellie so couldn’t stay at the Marriott Mountain Valley Lodge as they don’t allow pets. The two properties I was researching and considering were the Residence Inn and the Hotel Alpenrock (a Hilton Curio). Both looked nice.

The Residence Inn is located off Main Street just south of the Marriott Valley Lodge. It’s very close to the ice rink. It comes with breakfast and has king and two queen suites. They all feature kitchens as well as on-site grills. They also have on-site laundry and an outdoor pool and hot tub. Pets are welcome for $100 and parking is $40 a night plus tax. They also have a $40 a night destination (resort fee). Their base rate was a bit higher than the Alpenrock though so with my Hilton Honors status we were thinking of going with this.

The Hotel Alpenrock is a renovated and beautiful property located less than a 10 minute walk from Main Street. It’s in a picturesque area. These are hotel rooms so no kitchenettes. They have two main restaurants on-site The Carter and the Edwin. They also have a cute speakeasy called the Canary and a Cafe and Bistro to grab a coffee. They also have resort amenities like evening smores, an art tour, daily refreshments, a fitness center and outdoor hot tubs. They only offer valet parking at $55 a night plus tax. There is also a daily resort fee of $45 a night plus tax that includes a $10 food and beverage credit, hotel shuttle, refillable water, resort activities and more. Pets are allowed and the pet fee is $75.

We ultimately selected an Airbnb about a 15 minute walk from town south of Maggie Pond and it was perfect for us as we had Ellie. It had a kitchen and wonderful river views as well as a washer and dryer. Though we got it through Airbnb, the property is managed by Great Western Lodging.

Gravity Haus though is another Breckenridge accommodation with a good location. It is also by Maggie Pond and adjacent to the slopes. It’s less than a block from Main Street. The rooms are hip. The place oozes fun. They have an on-site restaurant called Cabin Juice serving brunch and dinner as well as cocktails. They include the resort fee in their rate. Parking is $45 a night plus tax and if you want to bring your pup, it’s a $50 fee.

There are many other options out there to have a nice stay in Breck. You’ll also find cheaper accommodations in Frisco and Silverthorne. Again, it’s all what you are looking for. If you are just looking for somewhere to sleep, these options might do, but if you’re looking to be walking distance to things, you might want to look elsewhere. For example, the AC Hotel in Frisco looks lovely, but it is right off the highway. Whole Foods is walkable but not much else in terms of picturesque areas. The Hyatt Ranahan is also gorgeous, but it is between Breck and Frisco and requires a car.

Rates are pricey in ski season as expected. During off peak times like May and October, rates to be cheaper and you can find some details.

Also note that some accommodations, especially vacation rentals do not have A/C. If going in the summer, double-check if this is important to you, but Breck does cool off at night.
